Design Inspiration from the Kentucky Derby

It didn’t take long to be filled with inspiration on a recent trip to the Kentucky Derby with my family.

As designers know, fashion trends and interior design go hand-in-hand. I was surrounded by a sea of beautiful, colorful hats and garments in every style and size imaginable. How often to do you see every color of the rainbow circling around you? It was a feast for the eyes. The rain at the Derby poured over us like the ALS bucket challenge, but that didn’t stop our enthusiasm and excitement!

On the way in, I was able to pull my camera out from under my plastic slicker to get this quick shot of Cody and Isabelle. The Oaks race the day before was a little drier. We didn’t mind either way. It was special time together as a family. Nothing could be better. Well maybe one thing…having our dog Georgia with us.

What does every designer do with new ideas? Sketch and go shopping! Furniture shopping that is, for Belle Vue. We walked through the streets of Louisville, filled with boutiques. From sleek modern chairs and old architecture, to comfy floral southern bedding–the array of options fed my eagerness to discover more.

At that point it was sunny, beautiful weather, so we made our way to the countryside through the breathtaking rolling hills of Kentucky. Old oak trees lined the roads in Versailles, Midway and Paris Kentucky, and you could see horse farms and bluegrass for miles. More inspiration. More depth to take in.

Beauty and inspiration can come from anywhere. From an incredible experience like the Kentucky Derby or a simple walk through a field on a sunny day. If it moves you in some way, you know you’re on the right path. Just keep going.
